The Spaces Map
The map, by Gloucester based illustrator Holly Mae Gooch, displays 8 important historic buildings in the city centre where local musicians, artists, poets, songwriters and singers met for 8 different one off sessions to create, record and film new original songs. Holly drew the illustrations of each of the buildings involved in the project.
The Spaces Trail
1St. Mary de Crypt, Southgate Street
Begin your walk at St. Mary de Crypt on Southgate Street. Sometimes the church is open. Since Spaces it has been refurbished and is a really nice place to spend time in.
2Blackfriars
With St. Mary de Crypt's main door at your back turn left a few paces along Southgate Street until you reach the entrance to the cobbled road "Greyfriars" on the left. Take the alleyway on your right directly opposite Greyfriars which is signposted. Blackfriars will be on your left at the end of the alley with Ladybellegate car park on your right. Blackfriars is run by the city council. Sometimes you can visit - it's worth exploring their website for more information
3St. Nicholas
From Blackfriars turn right into Ladybellegate Street walk to the point when it bends left, cross the road then walk diagonally across Longsmith Street into Bull Lane (an alley) at the end of which turn left onto Westgate Street. Walk down Westgate Street to St. Nicholas (you can see the tower in the distance). Keys to the church can be collected at The Folk opposite. Its a fabulous and curious building well worth stepping inside, but is in need some TLC.
4St. Mary de Lode
Walk just a little bit further down Westgate Street from St. Nicholas and turn right into Archdeacon Street to St. Mary de Lode. It's a fascinating church, the oldest place of worship in the city. The church is still in use for services and sometimes with help from church wardens, it's possible to visit. Contact the parish of Hempsted with St Mary de Lode and St Mary de Crypt for more information
5Gloucester Cathedral
Turn right from Archdeacon Street into St. Mary's Square. Walk past St. Mary de Lode toward the Bishop Hooper Memorial then under St. Mary's Gate towards the Cathedral. Enter the Cathedral and head towards the Cloisters where the Chapter House is situated. You can't miss the Cathedral, it is the no.1 destination for most visitors to the city. It's free to enter and is open most of the time to visitors.
6St. John's
With the Cathedral behind you go through the gates out of College Green into College Street at the end opposite Shire Hall turn left and head up Westgate Street. Look out for St. John's Alley on your left (just after McDonald's) and walk to the end to reach the back of St. John's on your right. Sometimes this church (now run by the Methodist Church) is open and can be entered by curious visitors. In the summer local art exhibitions have been regularly hosted there in the past.
7St. Michael's Tower
Walk around the side of St. John's (to your right) turn right into Northgate Street then, with the church behind you on the your right, walk toward The Cross where you will see St. Michael's Tower standing tall at the centre of the city. It is run by Gloucester Civic Trust and is open during the summer to visitors.
8Gloucester Guildhall
With St. Michael's Tower on your right walk along Eastgate Street. The Guildhall entrance is just after the banks on your left diagonally opposite the entrance to King's Walk shopping arcade. The Guildhall is a thriving arts centre with a programme of live music, cinema, comedy and dance run by the city council. It is another hidden gem in the city centre.
